Shortly after Lorca died, a group of his friends in Los Angeles got together and purchased a tree to be planted in his memory through an organization called TreePeople. TreePeople was founded in 1973, ironically the year Lorca was born, and contributions to its “Gift of Life” program provide funds to its reforestation efforts. The tree is located in the Santa Monica Wetlands.

We received a solilcitation from the Church of St. Luke in the Fields for funds to help them with the construction of new portals. One of them, the Barrow Street Garden Gate, located near the south lawn between the Church building and the school gym, includes a pathway lined with over twenty trees. This new Barrow Street Pathway has created a new green space and a kind of mini-arboretum.

We purchased one of these Memorial Trees for the new entrance to St. Luke’s School which Lorca attended for 6th through 8th grades. The cost of the tree was $500 and our memorial to Lorca’s memory will be included on a plaque to be placed with the trees when the project is completed.

So now there is a tree in Lorca’s memory on both the West Coast in Los Angeles where he died and the East Coast in New York City where he spent most of his life.

TreePeople was founded in 1973 by Andy Lipkis. They have provided a nice alternative to grief with over a million plantings inside and in the surrounding mountains of Los Angeles. TreePeople is now at the forefront of the urban forestry movement by offering sustainable trees to the urban sprawl that is L.A.

Thousands of trees are planted each year through TreePeople’s “Gift of Life” tree dedication program. TreePeople also inspires others through the volunteer planting of seedlings in the surrounding diameter of L.A. The object is to encourage personal involvement in reforestation.

Soon after the tragic accident which took Lorca’s life, his kind friends that he met and lived among in Los Angeles, came together and planted a tree in his honor. We are grateful to TreePeople for making this possible.
